Symptom: When I press the ecobutton I receive the following error message:

"Standby not supported" ( XP)

This error occurs when you try to put the system in standby mode. The cause is a third-party driver that doesn't comply with the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) standard for power management. When the system goes into standby mode, it tells all drivers that the system is changing power state. If a driver doesn't respond correctly, the system displays a blue screen. Almost any kind of driver (e.g., CD-ROM drivers, network drivers, keyboard drivers) can cause this problem.

Putting Windows into its basic normal sleep mode should also cause the same outcome.

Remedy:

To isolate the eco-button as the fault click start and then hit the power button and choose standby, if standby is still not supported then try the following

1. Try updating Windows to the latest service pack via Window update

2. Make sure all device drivers are up to date as outdated drivers can cause problems with the sleep process.

To achieve this you can update drivers manually or there are programs available that will scan your current setup to determine if any are outdated that have available updates.

3. If you have other devices plugged into the computer, unplug to eliminate them one at a time.

If you still can't diagnose what device may be causing the problem then Microsoft recommends the following process (We recommend that this should only be attempted by someone with a good knowledge of Windows)

This process is asking you to create a clone of you current hardware setup so that you can disable certain devices to isolate the cause of the problem.

Create a copy of your current hardware profile by going to Control Panel > System > Hardware > Hardware Profiles.

Then restart your computer and select this new profile, when Windows has loaded you can now go into
Control Panel
> System > Hardware > Device Manager and disable all suspect devices (i.e. non-Microsoft devices) for this hardware profile. (You can disable a device on the General tab of the device's property sheet.)

Reboot using the same hardware profile and try to reproduce the "standby not supported" error. If you can't, start re-enabling drivers and rebooting until the problem reappears. Then delete or update the offending driver.
